Project title:
Mechanical Ventilation and Delerium
Funding agency:
NIH
Project status:
open to enrollment soon
Principal investigator:
Eric Milbrandt, MD
Project summary:
The goals for this study are to examine the role of occult diffuse brain injury and impaired central cholinergic transmission in the development of ICU delirium and to determine if treatment of ICU delirium with IV haloperidol improves outcomes in mechanically ventilated patients. We will achieve these goals by nesting a double blind RCT of haloperidol versus placebo for the treatment of ICU delirium within a prospective inception cohort of mechanically ventilated ICU patients. The study will begin by enrolling patients into the inception cohort within 24 hours of intubation. Patients will be screened daily for the development of delirium. Those who become delirious will then be randomized to treatment with haloperidol vs. placebo to examine differences in outcomes.
