Project Title:
MRI TSC for Delirium in Mechanical Ventilation - Pilot Imaging Grant

Funding Agency:
Magentic Resonance Research Center, Univ. of Pitsburgh Medical Center

Total Project Period:
Jul 1, 2005 - Dec 31, 2006

Principal Investigator:
Eric B.  Milbrandt, MD

Project Summary:
The goal of this pilot-imaging project is to examine the role of occult diffuse brain injury in the underlying pathophysiology of ICU delirium.  I will use high-resolution three-dimensional MRI to assess differences in brain tissue sodium concentration (TSC), a highly sensitive marker of tissue viability, to test the hypothesis that patients with delirium have occult ischemic brain injury as manifest by abnormal areas of increased TSC.
