| This
lectureship honors Ake Grenvik, MD, Ph.D., and his wife, Inger,
for their contributions to the field of critical care medicine.
Between 1971 and 1996, Dr. Grenvik directed the University of Pittsburgh's
Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program, the first and
largest such program in the world. A founding member of the Society
of Critical Care Medicine, as well as the World Federation of Societies
of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Grenvik has published
more than 350 scientific articles, book chapters, and other educational
materials about critical care, covering such diverse topics as cardiopulmonary
interaction, brain death, organ transplantation, and ethical practices
in patient care. More than 500 physicians completed the University's
critical care training program during his tenure as director. Born
in Sweden, Dr. Grenvik earned his degrees and completed training
in general and cardiothoracic surgery in that country. He
immigrated to the United States in 1968, where he trained and obtained
certification in anesthesiology and critical care medicine.
He has spent his entire United States medical career at the University
of Pittsburgh, where he currently is Distinguished Service Professor
of Critical Care Medicine and Professor of Anesthesiology, Medicine
and Surgery.
