| Surgical Critical
Care Fellowship
Program Director | Samuel A. Tisherman, MD
Fellows in the surgical critical
care (SCC) training program have usually completed accredited general
surgery training. However, in accordance with current American Board
of Surgery regulations, candidates will be considered after three
years of general surgery, neurosurgery, urology, or obstetrics and
gynecology residency if they plan to complete their primary specialty
training after the one-year fellowship in SCC.
The fellowship is a balanced year, including rotations through trauma/general
surgery, surgical, abdominal organ transplantation, cardiothoracic
surgery, and burn care ICUs. Electives in pediatric and obstetrics/gynecology
ICUs are available. Management of trauma or transplantation patients
is emphasized within the SCC program, with rotations on a surgical
service that combines ICU and operating experiences. Integration
of the surgical critical care fellowship with a traumatology fellowship
(total of two years) or transplantation fellowship (total of two
and a half years) is available for interested and qualified surgical
trainees.
