Guan Jun, MD, from Shanghai, China.
Dr Guan Jun is a Chinese surgeon who finished training in 1996. Since then, he has been the Director of the General ICU and the step down unit at Changzheng Hospital of 1300 beds in Shanghai. Dr Jun has attended the meeting of the American College of Surgeons in Chicago last month, following which he spent a week at Loyola University Hospital and then decided to visit our Department of CCM at UPMC. His particular areas of interest are trauma critical care, CPCR and simulation training. Indeed there are two Laerdal simulators in use in one of the Shanghai hospitals.

Osvaldo Llanos, MD, Santiago, Chile.
Dr Osvaldo Llanos is a certified internal
medicine specialist in
Chile. He is currently a senior CCM fellow
in Santiago, Chile. This provides him with the opportunity to do
a two month rotation abroad. Thus he will be a visiting observing
physician in the Pitt CCM Department during October and November.
His interest is to have exposure to the following ICUs: Liver TX,
CT, SICU at VA
and T/NS. He would also like to include a visit to
WISER.
September - November 2003
Jose Gimeno y Costa, visiting ICM resdient from Spain.
Dr Jose Gimeno graduated in 1998 from the
University of Valencia in Spain. With Spain having a primary specialty
in Medicina Critical y Terapia Intensiva, he is in his fifth year
of residency and will graduate in June 2004. As a senior year elective
he has chosen
to be an observer in our CCM Department for three
months. The University Hospital in Valencia has 1600 beds but few
ICUs. His main CCM training has been in the MICU. The hospital is
a trauma center and performs many transplants, including kidneys,
livers, heatrs and lungs.
September - November 2003
Tomas Regueira y Heskia, MD, from Chile.
Dr Tom Regueira graduated in 2000 from Pontificia Universidad Cattolica
in Santiago, Chile. He is currently in his third (senior) year of
internal medicine residency at Santiago's Hospital Clinico,
a unviversity
hospital with some 500 beds. They have traumatology, and transplant
kidneys, livers, hearts and lungs. With CCM being a subspecialty
in Chile, he is considering the possibility of obtaining training
in CCM in the US and is preparing himself by taking all relevant
exams.
September 18, 2003 - Mid December 2003
Dr Eric Hoste from Ghent, Belgium.
Dr Hoste is a Dutch 1989 graduate of Ghent
University. He is board certifiend in internal medicine and intensive
care medicine with additional training in nephrology. He currently
serves as a staff member in the 50 bed ICU complex of the 1000 bed
Ghent University Hospital. He is particularly interested in renal
problems of ICU patients and will spend most of his time at UPMC
with Dr Kellum in nephrology related research. But he will also
participate in our educational activities in CCM. He will also be
an occasional observer in various ICUs.
September 2003 - January 2004
Turkan Togal, MD, visiting anesthesiologist from Turkey.
Dr Togal is an assistant professor of anesthesiology at Inonu University
Hospital, an 1800 bed facility with some 120 ICU beds
in Inonu,
Turkey. She graduated in 1989 and finished her anesthesia residnecy
in 1995. She has special experience and interest in neuroanesthesia
and trauma intensive care.
September 15 - February 29
Dr Roberto Serretta of Palermo, Italy.
Dr Serretta is an anesthesiologist/intensivist
at IsMeTT in Palermo. This means that he is a UPMC Palermo faculty
member and therefore is provided with an institutional license to
practice medicine in the ORs andICUs of UPMC. This is different
from other international vistors who are only observing. He will
have assignments in the OR for the first three months, particularly
in liver and cardiothoracic transplant anesthesia, followed in Jan.
- Feb. 2004 by corresponding ICU rotations during which time he
will participate in patient care including night calls. His English
is very good. He is staying at Shadyside Inn and carries beeper
# 8094.
August 11, 2003 - August 2005
Dr Alexander Kersten of Aachen, Germany.
Dr Alex Kersten received his MD degree in April, 2003,
from the Rheinisch Westfaelisch Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in
Aachen, Germany. During his medical training he worked on data collection
and the evaluation of scoring systems on the Medical ICU of the
RWTH-Aachen. He is interested in obtaining training in CCM based
on either internal medicine or anesthesiology. Currently he is performing
research in Dr Derek Angus' group. He has taken USMLE step 1 and
intends to take step 2, while in the US. He is also planning on
applying to the Pitt Graduate School of Public Health in order to
obtain an MPH degree. He is here on a J 1 visa. He is married with
his wife being a teacher. Dr. Kersten has not yet decided whether
he will seek specialty training in the US or in Germany.
August 11 - 31, 2003
Dr Rolando Celis, a 2002 graduate of medical school in Lima, Peru,
is a visiting observing physician in our ICUs of the CCM Department.
He has taken the first two steps of the USMLE, the clinical test
and TOEFL and is looking for an opportunity to do a surgical residency
in the US. He will rotate through our T/NSICU, NICU, CTICU and LTXICU.
August 2003 - January 2004
Maria Escobar,MD, is visiting UPMC as an observing obstetrics/gynaecology
resident on an elective rotation from her alma mater, the University
of Valle in Cali, Colombia, SA. Dr Escobar graduated from this university
medical school in 1998
and will finalize her training in June of
2004. She has been scientifically active and already has 20 publications
on obstetric and fetal problems. Her main interests are with critical
care in obstetrics and trauma during pregnancy. She is starting
her experiences at UPMC with a rotation through the MWH ICU to be
followed by observation in the obstetric labor suite and the Neonatal
ICU.
July 21 - October 20, 2003
Ahmet A. Balik, MD, visiting observing surgeon, graduated in 1989
from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. He served as a surgical
resident at Atatyrk University in Erzurum, Turkey, 1991 - 1996,
and remains on that faculty in general surgery. His particular field
of interest is hepatico-pancreatico biliary surgery. He will primarily
rotat through our Liver TX ICU and the Trauma ICU but also spend
significant time in the Surgical Department.
July 21 - September 30, 2003
Dr Sadia Shah from Pakistan.
Dr Shah is the wife of Dr Khalid Matin, a junior faculty member
of the Hematology/Oncology Division in the Pittsburgh Department
of Medicine. Sadia Shah is a 1998 graduate of Baqai Medical College
in Karachi, Pakistan. She has a significant interest in CCM but
first needs a primary specialty and is applying for internal medicine
residency at all Pittsburgh hospitals, starting in 2004. In the
meantime she wants to be an observer in different ICUs. Starting
in the PUH NICU, she will move to MICU at MUH and probably remain
there until the end of September.
July 8 - September 15
Rachel E. Lynas of Aberdeen University, Scotland, will be working
with Dr John Kellum in his laboratory on blood purification problems
in sepsis. Ms Lynas will obtain a BS degree in Neuroscience in June
2004. She is hoping to spend a few years at the Pasteur Institute
in Paris after graduation.
June 7 - June 27
We will be visited by Dr Jon Bergmann, who is an Icelandic anesthesiologist/intensivist.
He is completing his training at the University Hospital in Oslo,
Norway, where he is offered a position as an assistant professor
upon return from Pittsburgh. He will spend a week each as an observing
physician in Liver TX ICU, CTICU and T/NSICU while in our CCM Department.
May 1 - June 30
Dr Hiroyuki Tanaka is assistant professor in anesthesiology and
intensive care at the University of Kyushi in Fukuoka, Japan. Since
Sep. 2001 he is doing research on sepsis in Dr Billiar's lab. Dep
of Surgery. Before returning to Japan in August this year, he will
have short rotations as an observing physician in our Liver TX ICU,
CTICU and Ped.ICU, all during the months of May and June.
May 12 - July 11 (Research physician
with Dr Kellum)
Dr Jose Luis Gomez y Villalobos graduated in 1999 from Javeriana
University in Bogota, Colombia. After a mandatory internship year,
he has served in major EM departments, currently in Bogota. His
interest in sepsis problems has brought him to our CCM Departmen
where he will serve in Dr Kellum's laboratory. As a visiting observing
physician he is also welcome at our educational activities.
May 1 - June 15
Antonio Arcadipane, MD, Chief of Anesthesia and CCM at
IsMeTT in Palermo, Italy, has UPMC credentials and is rotating through
PUH OR, Liver ICU and CTICU as one of several faculty members on
his staff to update his experiences with our current transplantation
patient management in both OR and Intensice Care.
April 14 - 16
Dr Vladimir Kharlamov is medical director of the Cardiothoracic
ICU at the University Medical Center in Riga, Latvia, one of the
Baltic states in Europe. He visited Dr Arthur Boujoukos in our UPMC
CTICU and also met with other CCM faculty members.
February - March
Dr Malik Tariq Rahim is a 2001 graduate of medical school in Lahore,
Pakistan. While visiting the US in search of a medical residency
in this country, he has worked as a volunteer in Dr Derek Angus
GenIMS program.
January - March
Dr Gaetano Burgio is an anesthesiologist at Ismett in Palermo, Italy.
He is a member of their liver transplant team and also serves as
director of the ICU. He has been delegated to UPMC Presbyterian
for three months to particiapate in transplantation activities in
the OR and also rotated through both the Liver ICU and the CTICU
at PUH.
January 6 - March 26
Ebru Sizanli, MD, senior resident in anesthesiology and reanimatology
at Inonu University, Turkey, is a visiting observing physician Jan.
6 - Mar. 26. With rotations in our T/NSICU, CTICU, LTXICU and VA
SICU, she will also visit WISER and the research laboratories, especially
those involved in studies on sepsis, which is Dr Sizanli's particular
area of research interest.
January 13 - 16
Two prominent Dutch colleagues paid a short but intense visit to
the CCM Department. Dr Leon Aarts, recently appointed vice chair
of the University Hospital of Groningen and responsible for all
ICM was accompanied by Dr L J Bras, ICU Director at the University
Hospital in Utrecht. They met with Dr Fink and several other members
of the CCM Dep., visited WISER and SCRR, were introduced to our
CCM Training Program by Dr Rogers, discussed anesthesiology issues
with Dr Williams and also visited Dr Delude in the sepsis laboratory.
January 26
Dr Maekawa and three of his faculty members visited from Yamaguchi
University Hospital in Ube, Japan. Dr Maekawa is Professor and Chairman
of the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, a combination
of medical specialties increasingly common in Japan. In San Antonio
at the SCCM meeting, the group will present their research experiences
from using hypothermia in head trauma patients.
2002
December 9 - 13
Dr Alfredo Constain is professor of general surgery at the University
of Antioquia in Medellin. He has completed separate training in
critical care as well. His wife, Dr Margarita Urhan, is an anesthesiologist,
currently a fellow in CCM in Medellin. The couple have spent several
months with Professor Andres Esteban, a renowned intensivist in
Madrid, Spain. On their return trip to Colombia, they stopped for
a week to visit our CCM Department, Dec. 9 - 13. They intend to
return for a 3 month visiting physician observership in the Spring
of 2003.
September 16 - 18
Palle Toft, MD and Associate Professor, and Hans Skriver, MD and
Assistant Professor, from the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive
Care Medicine at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, are both full
time intesivists and particularly interested in sepsis research,
which attracted them to visit the CCM Department at UPMC Sep. 16
- 18, 2002. While this visit was very short, a large number of the
CCM faculty members met with the visitors to discuss clinical and
scientific issues, especially related to infection, trauma and shock.
September - November
Dr Ana Martin-Luengo is serving as a visiting observing physician
in our CCM Department for three months, Sep. - Nov. 2002. She is
in her final year of training in Intensive Care Medicine at the
Rio Hortega University Hospital in Valladolid in Northern Spain.
ICM is a primary specialty in Spain with a total of six years of
training. With a special interest in traumatology, she is starting
in our department with a rotation this month through the T/.NSICU.
August 26 - 31
Dr Fransesca Rubulotta is visiting the Dep. of CCM and the UPMC
Palliative Care Service during the week. As a resident in Anesthesiology/CCM
at the Trieste University School of Medicine in Italy she is currently
on a sabbatical leave studying end of life care with Mitchell Levy,
MD,at Brown University in Providence, RI, using this opportunity
to include a visit to Pittsburgh.
August 6 - 13
Lars Wiklund, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair Dep. of Anesthesia and
CCM, University of Uppsala, Sweden, visited the Dep. of CCM and
the SCRR, where Dr Wiklund currently has one of his graduates, Dr
Nozari as a visiting researcher in Dr Safar's group. Dr Wiklund
has previously sent faculty members for both research and clinical
activities in our department such as Dr Sten Rubertsson, currently
an associate professor at the University of Uppsala.

Dr Zhan Hong, Chief Emergency Department at The first Hospital,
Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou GD, Peoples
Republic of China, visited The Dep. of CCM on her tour of the US.
June 18
Dr Sharon Einav an Israeli anesthesiologist and presently a fellow
in CCM at HadassahUniversity Hospital in Jerusalem, visited the
CCM Department and SCRR on June 18, 2002, being particularly interested
in CPR research.
