In his capacity as Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, Dr. Michael Pinsky introduced this week's visiting professor, Paul Kubes, PhD and Professor in the Departments of Physiology & Biophysics and Medicine. He is also Director of the Calvin, Phoebe & Joan Snyder Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at the University of Calgary Health Sciences Centre in Alberta, Canada. Dr. Kubes has received dozens of awards, mentored numerous postdoctoral fellows and PhD and MSc candidates in his laboratory, and his current research support amounts to over $12 M. He serves as Associate Editor of both the Journal of Immunology and Microcirculation. He is a frequently invited speaker and has presented over 100 lectures at international meetings throughout the world. Dr. Kubes has published more than 400 scientific papers and edited two books. While visiting our Department of Critical Care Medicine during March 10-12, he gave a lecture on "Imaging Intravascular Immunity" at CCM Research Conference and then on "Role of Immune Cells, Platelets and Endothelium in Sepsis Models" at CCM Grand Rounds. These lectures demonstrated colorful microscopic movies of intravascular leucocytes being activated after LPS administration by integrin and selectin, resulting in leucocyte adhesion to the endothelium followed by migration through the capillary wall into the surrounding tissue. He also demonstrated how intravascular leucocytes secreted a DNA based netlike structure which trapped bacteria making them available for destruction. These were fascinating lectures which stirred up many questions from the large audiences. |
