The Safar Legacy Continues

back

Information has been received this month from Mr. Christoph Redelsteiner, who is Chief of the Emergency Medical Services of the Vienna Red Cross in Austria (Dr. Peter Safar's native country), that their application to the Vienna City Government has been approved to name the street outside the EMS Training Center, the SAFAR GASSE. This is, indeed, an unusual honor to the late Dr. Safar. He not only founded the University of Pittsburgh Anesthesia Department with its, then, Critical Care Medicine Division but, also, initiated the International Resuscitation Research Center (by its current Director, Dr. Patrick Kochanek named the Safar Center for Resuscitation Research). Dr. Safar started many programs at our medical center, including EMS training and introduced the modern ambulance system, initiated with the Freedom House Enterprise. Like his home city of Vienna in his native country Austria, we in the Department of CCM are very proud of Dr. Safar's many accomplishments in Pittsburgh and the rest of the world.
