Dr. Karen Walson, PCCM Fellow, Receives Several Honors
back

Dr. Hulya BayirKaren Walson, MD, a third-year PCCM Fellow, has received a grant from the Laerdal Foundation to study the effect of combining antioxidants with hyperoxic CPR, the current standard of care and what AHA guidelines recommend for resuscitation of children. At the Safar Center, she has studied histological and functional outcome after pediatric asphyxial cardiac arrest. Her work shows that hyperoxic resuscitation leads to oxidative stress in the brain of 17-day old rats - equivalent to a 2 - 4 year old child in terms of brain development - and this can be ameliorated by normoxic resuscitation or addition of antioxidants to hyperoxic resuscitation. For this excellent research she not only received the In-Training Fellow Award at the 2008 SCCM Congress but also won first prize for oral presentations at the AHA Allegheny Division 16th Annual Fellows Research Day on February 22 this year. We congratulate Dr. Walson for her successful accomplishments.
