Together with several Pitt and CORE collaborators, Michael DeVita, MD, Professor of CCM, as the Principal Investigator has received a grant of almost a million dollars from HRSA to implement an educational program to perform uncontrolled donation after cardiac death ( UDCD ). The goals include an increase of UDCD and implementation of a Condition T process ( modeled after Condition C, the UPMC Rapid Response System ) for cardiac death victims in the Emergency Department. This project should provide a web based resource, which if implemented and used nationally, could increase successful transplantation of organs from UDCD donors. The grant covers three years from September 1, 2007. This is a most laudable effort to increase availability of organs, primarily kidneys and livers, to the large number of patients awaiting transplantation. The idea is unique as there is no other such system in operation anywhere else.
