Dr. John Hotchkiss Awarded Two Million Dollar NIH Grant
back
John Hotchkiss, MD, was recently awarded a five year, 2 million dollar NIH grant “Computational Analysis of Noninvasive Ventilation.” The project brings together accomplished investigators from very diverse fields: Mathematics (Philip Crooke, PhD), Sleep Medicine (Mark Sanders, MD), and Critical Care Medicine (Gilles Clermont, MD). Dr. Hotchkiss and his team will explore fundamental aspects of respiratory pattern generation and patient:ventilator interaction, applying contemporary computational and bioengineering techniques in settings spanning pure mathematics, bench research, and clinical applications. They will develop novel tools for patient monitoring during mechanical ventilation, as well as algorithms to guide titration of care during this complex life support intervention. The project places heavy emphasis on applying rigorous computational and quantitative techniques to a common problem in clinical medicine, a translational focus that mirrors the growing strength of the Department of Critical Care in computational and quantitative biology.
