May 30, 2007, was the date for this annual event honoring the late Peter Safar, MD, Dr h.c. Arthur S. Levine, MD, Dean and Senior Vice Chancellor of the Health Scineces at the University of Pittsburgh introduced the symposium and greeted the participants welcome. He pointed out Dr Safar's ealy involvement in resuscitation, brain problems and use of simulators in medical education through his collaboration with the Laerdal Corporation in the production of the famous CPR manequin Resusci Anne which later led to the high fidelity, computerized SimMan and the full family of modern simulators.
The morning session on brain trauma concentrated on blast injuries as indicated in the program. The Nation's most prominent researchers in this field gave fascinating presentations to the crowded audience. This was followed by the 27th Peter and Eva Safar Lecture presented by renowned David M.Gaba, MD, Associate Dean, Immersive and Simulation-based Learning and Professor of Anesthesia at Stanford University, who spoke on the topic "Challenges in the Use of Simulation to Achieve High-Reliability Healthcare".
In the afternoon, the Symposium moved to WISER and another group of excellent speakers presented first class lectures on simulation in education currently used by surgeons, anesthesiologists, EM and CCM physicians as well as pharmacists, nurses and other health care providers. This was by far the most successful Safar Symosium for which the organizers, Drs Kochanek and Phrampus are to be congratulated. |
