Biography

As a Vice-President and Associate Chief Medical Officer of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Dan Martich has led one of the nation’s largest integrated delivery healthcare networks to a leadership position within the growing field of electronic health records.  During Dan’s tenure, UPMC has gained a reputation as the nation's premier innovator in leveraging new products, processes and technology to solve various information technology needs for the betterment of patient care. Under Dan’s direction, UPMC is defining a new world of health information technology featuring transparency to the consumer and referring physicians. 

Dr. Martich has a long history with UPMC, having joined the second largest non-governmental employer in Pennsylvania in 1992 as a critical care physician.  Dan has served as an intensivist and co-director of the cardiothoracic intensive care unit winning awards for his clinical acumen and teaching abilities. He started the critical care information system department shortly after joining UPMC and has served as its only medical director.  That department provides for all of the bedside integration of information needs for each of the more than 150 critical care patients at UPMC-Presbyterian.  
                  
In 1999, Dan began serving in a similar capacity for all clinical information systems at the 19 hospitals of the UPMC, becoming responsible for developing standards of information sharing and display among the multiple care sites.  Dan was appointed Vice President and Chief Physician of the UPMC eRecord, the health system’s enterprise aggregation of all electronic medical record applications in 2003.  

Dan plays a key role in several business and government advocacy organizations including being a founding member of the Pennsylvania Regional Health Information Network. He is on the board of Askesis Development Group, an industry leading software company providing behavioral health IT products and services.  Dr. Martich also serves on the board of advisors of KLAS, an independent monitoring organization whose mission is improve the delivery of healthcare technology by measuring and reporting on vendor performance.  

Dr. Martich holds an MD degree from West Virginia University, and a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry from Bethany College. He served his internal medicine residency at The Ohio State University and completed fellowship training in Critical Care Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine and is Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

In 2005, Dr. Martich was appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer of the UPMC. He is a member of the medical honorary Alpha Omega Alpha and has authored more than 50 journal articles and book chapters on critical care medicine, heart and lung transplantation, electronic health records, and information technology in healthcare.

Dan is married to Lisa Buckingham Martich and has two children, Aleksander and Stephanie.
