Biography
Born in Sweden, MD 1956, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, PhD 1966 University of Uppsala. Immigrated to the US in 1968 as a visiting associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Tenured professor of Anesthesiology/CCM since 1974 and Distinguished Service Professor of CCM since 1995. Directed Pitt’s training program in CCM for 25 years, currently having graduated more than 600 subspecialty physicians from all continents of the world. Lectures frequently worldwide. Has published over 350 scientific papers and book chapters. Author, editor or co-editor of 25 books, including 4th Edition of Textbook of Critical Care with Ake Grenvik as chief editor. Most of his own research and scientific writing is in the field of Critical Care Medicine and varies from physiologic and outcome studies as well as organizational questions in the ICU to transplantation issues, ethical dilemmas, physician training in CCM, and simulators in medical education. Founding member and past president of Society of CCM which honored Grenvik in February 2000 with its highest award, the Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Grenvik is one of the founding council members and a past officer of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine. He has also served on numerous local, national and international committees, including UPMC Credentials Committee, chaired the Distinguished Faculty Committee at Pitt 1998/1999, and was a member of the University of Pittsburgh Institutional Review Board (IRB) 2000-2002. Currently in addition to CCM, he holds a faculty position at the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER), UPMC’s simulation center for training of all categories of healthcare students and professionals and also serves as web master in the CCM Department and at WISER.
